What information does a professional entomological examination provide?
To effectively eradicate pests, it is important to know what type of insect you are dealing with. For this purpose, production plants, grain storage facilities, and other facilities use a detailed study of them – entomological expertise.
Such examination is a comprehensive biological study of adult pests, larvae, eggs or their fragments and traces of vital activity. It is carried out in the laboratory and is aimed at a detailed study and identification of the type of insects, their developmental stage, age and other nuances that may be important in further control.
Where and how to conduct an entomological examination
The examination is carried out by licensed entomologists. It is in demand in medicine, forensics, industry and agriculture. Such a study is necessary to determine the quality of products and identify parasites that can spoil the entire stock, causing huge losses.
Fleas, ticks, and other insects are pathogens of dangerous diseases, so examination measures are developed taking into account the biology of all types of pests, conditions and stages of their development and habitat.
It is carried out before insecticidal and acaricidal treatments to identify insects that pose a threat of bio-contamination of the facility. Repeated entomological examination is performed to monitor the effectiveness.
Information contained in the entomological examination
The list of items is compiled in accordance with the individual needs and characteristics of the object, as well as the purpose and objectives of the study.
In most cases, the examination contains answers to the following questions:
- Are there any representatives of entomological origin in the biomaterial: insects, their tissues, body parts, larvae, eggs, and vital products?
- What are the taxonomic characteristics of the insects found: species, genus, order, family?
- How many types of insects are found in the material?
- What is the stage of life development of the insect, its average age, time of death, and the peak of the reproduction phase?
- What tissues and fragments of which pests were found in the material?
- Is there an insect infestation of seed or grain stocks?
- Have insect nests been found inside the premises and in the surrounding area?
- What measures should be taken to kill insects and larvae to clean the raw material: the method of disinfestation, chemicals and their concentration.
After determining the characteristics of insects and choosing a method of their elimination, experts provide recommendations on how to carry out prevention to prevent re-infestation. Thus, as a result of an entomological study, you will receive the necessary information about the ecology, biological characteristics and behavior of insects. This allows you to find the causes of pests, the period of their reproduction in products/raw materials, choose a method of controlling them and avoid repeating the problem of their reproduction.
